The jab is arguably a boxers most important punch, though it's probably the one with the least power behind it.
Here Conrad is ducking my jab. I'm a southpaw (that will be my U post), so I lead or jab with my right hand.
The jab serves several purposes, it can be used to keep one's opponent busy which helps to avoid being hit yourself. It can be a rangefinder which is especially useful against an unknown opponent. It can be used to set up a combination such as a one-two or a double jab-right, and it can be used as a stand alone punch in which the boxer snaps his arm back to their chin to resume their guard.
Muhammad Ali was know for carrying an excellent jab which opponents would rather not walk in to.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

Loved how you describe the jab..Your post reminded me of a wonderful middle-grade biography of Muhammad Ali a couple of years ago (Becoming Muhammad Ali)..
ReplyDeleteYour visual of the jab was very helpful also. Fun to learn all the ins and the outs.
ReplyDeleteCheers for another day!
My Journal
I always think of boxing when I hear the word jab. I saw on The Fight City they had a post about 12 masters of the jab.

I'll be honest. When I saw the title was jab I wasn't thinking boxing, lol, but shots. Boxing really is an intricate sport!

I can respect those with a good jab, but as for me I ain't going to be jabbing anybody. I can barely jabber effectively let alone jab.
